What types of edge banding are available?

Iron-on edge banding (pre-glued melamine or veneer) is the most common for DIY. PVC edge tape gives a durable, moisture-resistant finish. Solid wood lipping (glued strips) is best for high-quality furniture. Veneer strips can be applied with contact adhesive for a natural look.

How wide should edge banding be?

Edge banding should be slightly wider than the panel thickness. For 18mm panels, use 22mm wide banding, then trim flush. For iron-on banding, 2-3mm wider than the panel is sufficient. For solid lipping, 3-5mm wider allows for a clean flush trim.

Should I edge band before or after assembly?

Edge band visible edges before assembly where possible, as it is easier to trim and sand. Internal edges that will be joined can be left bare. For boxes, edge band the top edges (visible when the lid is open) before gluing the box together.

How do I trim iron-on edge banding?

After applying with an iron or edge banding machine, use an edge trimmer tool to trim the overhang flush with the panel face. A sharp craft knife or block plane also works well. Finish by lightly sanding the edge with 180-grit paper to remove any sharpness.

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the total length of edge banding needed based on panel dimensions, the number of edges per panel, and quantity.

Formula

Total length = Edge perimeter per panel x Number of panels x Waste factor

4 edges = 2L + 2W | 3 edges = 2L + W | 2 edges = 2L | 1 edge = L

The waste factor adds 10% for trim allowance and any joins. The result is divided by the roll length to determine the number of rolls needed.
