What is the best material for lining a jewellery box?

Velvet or flocked fabric is the traditional choice for jewellery boxes as it protects delicate items and looks luxurious. Self-adhesive felt is easier to work with for beginners. Ultrasuede is a durable modern alternative that does not snag on jewellery.

How do I attach lining material to a box?

Self-adhesive materials peel and stick directly. For non-adhesive fabrics, use spray adhesive (3M 77 or similar) applied evenly to the wood surface. PVA glue works but can soak through thin fabrics. Cut pieces slightly oversize and trim with a sharp blade after fitting.

Should I line the lid of a box?

Lining the lid interior gives a professional finish, especially for presentation boxes and jewellery boxes. For the lid, pad it with a thin layer of foam or wadding before covering with fabric for a cushioned look. Tool boxes and utility boxes do not need lid lining.

Area calculation

Base = Length x Width

Sides = 2(L x D) + 2(W x D)

Lid = Length x Width

Each piece includes a 20mm overlap allowance for folding and trimming. The fabric length is calculated based on the roll width to determine how much linear fabric to purchase.
