How We Calculate This
This calculator determines shelf spacing, cutting dimensions, and sheet material quantities for a bookcase with fixed top/bottom and adjustable internal shelves.
Shelf spacing formula
Shelf spacing = (Internal height - (Number of shelves x Thickness)) / (Number of shelves + 1)
Internal height = Overall height - (2 x material thickness) for the fixed top and bottom.
Material calculation
Total area includes: 2 sides (full height x depth), top + bottom + all shelves (internal width x depth). This is divided by the standard UK sheet size (2440 x 1220mm) and rounded up.
